We strictly follow all the guidelines of the National Residency Matching Program. The MGH Residency program does not take applicants outside of the match. Only applications completed in the entirety are considered. Each completed application must contain detailed curriculum vitae, medical school transcript, personal letter, and three letters of recommendation. The UIC-MGH residency program only sponsors J-1 visas, no exceptions will be made to this policy.
We do not discriminate against sex, age, or race. Each applicant is viewed as an individual, with the best fit of our program. We look for evidence of Scholarship, Academic Excellence, Commitment to the field of Surgery, with special attention to kindness and excellence of patient Care, altruism, professionalism, and extracurricular activities are specifically looked for.
We interview approximately 125 candidates for the General Surgery Program each year, from over 1000 well qualified applicants. Interviews are offered in four sessions, starting from October to mid January. The format for the day of interview begins with an hour long orientation to the Program by Dr. Vijay Maker and key faculty members from each institution. Following the session, each candidate will be interviewed by three faculty members on an individual basis for 15 – 20 minutes. The session concludes with a tour of the hospital, followed by lunch with the University of Illinois, Metropolitan Group Hospitals Residency in General Surgery faculty and staff.
Dress code for this event is business attire.

We accept applications positions via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
Please note the following application requirements:
- Applications will be accepted via ERAS only. (Paper and emailed applications will NOT be reviewed.)
- Applicants must have graduated from medical school within the last 7 years.
- J1 visa sponsorship only
- 222 or higher on USMLE
Application Process
Selection of resident candidates is made on the basis of medical school transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a personal interview with several full-time faculty and/or residents. Candidate applications and interviews are completed in the fall and winter of the fourth year of medical school.

- Photograph of applicant
- Curriculum Vitae
- Official copy of your medical school transcript
- Dean’s letter
- Three letters of recommendation
- Personal statement
- Copy of USMLE examination scores
